Maintenance Assistant - Student
JOIN OUR SHUTTLE-UM MAINTENANCE TEAM
The mission of Shuttle-UM student-operated Transit System is to provide safe and dependable transportation to University students, faculty, and staff, and to function as a learning environment for students.
Maintenance Assistants will assist in performing routine maintenance on all Shuttle-UM and DOTS vehicles. This non-CDL position is an essential component to the Shuttle-UM Transit System. Maintenance Assistants work closely with Dispatchers, Trainers and all Drivers to ensure a safe fleet and system.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Include but are not limited to:
- Must have a current valid Maryland Driver’s License fewer than 4 pts
- Demonstrate competence in all repairs and routine procedures
- Maintain a safe, efficient, and clean work environment
- Be prepared to make safety sensitive decisions and perform safety sensitive functions on short notice
- Picking up/dropping off non-commercial vehicles for specialty work from vendors
- Performing Fluid and Mileage checks during Sunday shifts
- Ensure each vehicle has correct fluid levels
- Fueling vehicles when necessary
- Maintain and submit completed vehicle paperwork
- Maintain required 12-hour minimum maintenance hours
- Attend and participate actively in regularly scheduled Maintenance Assistant meetings
- Any additional duties as directed by supervisors
- Timely response to all communication from Z05 or other supervisors.
- Leading and performing exterior vehicle washing as needed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Maintenance Bay and Shuttle-UM parking lot
- Exposure to noise, chemicals, and maintenance bay environment
DURATION
- Maintenance Assistants are generally hired throughout the Spring and Fall semesters. Upon being hired, employees are expected to begin work as soon as possible for the necessary training. Newly hired employees are encouraged to work the maximum amount of hours allotted in a week to complete necessary training.
- Rookie Maintenance Assistants are expected to work 35-40 hours per week, during the Winter and Summer sessions. This is the best opportunity for new employees to complete their training in the various services performed during these times.
- The first semester for a Maintenance Assistants is considered a probationary period after which a final decision will be made by the Maintenance supervisors about the person’s future within the unit.
WORK REQUIREMENTS
- Must have a current valid Maryland Driver’s License with fewer than 4 pts
- A Maintenance Shiftpick is usually held before each semester starts. employees are expected to attend the Maintenance Shiftpick
- A minimum of 12 maintenance hours per week (morning, afternoon, and overnight shifts are available).
- Only overnight shifts available. 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. May be split into 10:30 p.m. - 2:30 a.m. or 2:30 a.m. - 6:30 a.m.
- Expected to report to work on time (must be in uniform and on the maintenance bay floor at start time)
- New Maintenance Assistants are required to do 4 Sunday Fluid and Mileage check shifts every semester. This shift should start no later than 12:00 p.m. on Sundays.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Compensation is around $16.50 per hour
- Maintenance Assistants are also eligible to receive an additional $0.10 for every Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) test passed
