DONATE YOUR BIKE—DON'T ABANDON IT.
WHAT IS BICYCLE RECYCLE?
The Bicycle Recycle program, made possible by a Sustainability Fund Award from the UMD Office of Sustainability, will provide affordable refurbished bikes to students while reducing environmental waste. Donated bikes will be rebuilt by certified RecWell Bike Shop mechanics and sold at a discount at events throughout the academic year.
HOW TO DONATE YOUR BIKE
You can donate your bike anytime at any of five special bike racks on campus, or in person at the DOTS lobby in Regents Garage.
Fill out our Donation Release Form to get started. You will receive an email confirming your request after submitting the form.
WHY DONATE?
DOTS identifies and removes as many as 200 abandoned bicycles from the UMD campus each year. These bikes are retained as required by law for a year before DOTS donates them to community partners. However, after a year in storage, many of the bikes have deteriorated to the point of being unusable and ultimately end up in a landfill.
“Through Bicycle Recycle, we aim to cultivate a culture of donation rather than abandonment among students who no longer need their bikes,” says DOTS acting assistant director Marta Woldu. “The program will also reduce environmental waste that can result from abandoned bikes, and further promote cycling as a sustainable form of transportation by redistributing bikes to UMD students."
