TRANSFORMING SHUTTLE-UM
Route Reset is a comprehensive redesign of the Shuttle-UM campus bus network. Working within existing funding, the Department of Transportation Services (DOTS) is evaluating the entire system to optimize operational efficiency and align with emerging and future campus needs.
What is Route Reset?
Route Reset is the first full Shuttle-UM system redesign in many years. DOTS is approaching this as a cost-neutral effort that examines the entire network rather than making isolated adjustments. By combining ridership data, operational analysis and community input, the goal is to ensure Shuttle-UM remains a reliable, integrated transportation option as the campus and region continue to evolve.
DOTS is partnering with Kimley-Horn, a nationally recognized transportation consulting firm, and coordinating with the Campus Transportation Advisory Committee (CTAC) to guide this effort.
The redesigned system will be implemented no earlier than Fall 2027.
Why Now?
College Park and the University of Maryland have grown and changed in recent years. Travel patterns, housing locations and the regional transit connection continue to evolve, including the upcoming introduction of the Purple Line. Route Reset is an opportunity to proactively align Shuttle-UM service with how people travel today and how they are likely to travel in the future.
How the Process Works
Route Reset will unfold in phases:
- Phase 1: Building on What We Know
- Tell us how you travel and what matters most to you
- Phase 2: Draft Route Review
- See early route ideas and share feedback
- Phase 3: Refinement
- We use your feedback to refine and improve the proposed routes
- Phase 4: New System Announcement
- Learn what's changing and how it may affect how you use Shuttle-UM
- Phase 5: New System Launch
- Start using the updated Shuttle-UM Network
When Will Changes Happen?
Shuttle-UM routes and service levels are not changing at this time. Route Reset is a planning effort, and any proposed changes would follow additional engagement, review and advance communication before implementation. Any system-wide changes are anticipated no earlier than Fall 2027.
