Student Graphic Design Assistant

Under the direction of the Graphics Coordinator, the Graphic Design Student assists in creating design solutions that will aid the effective dissemination of departmental information and marketing strategies. The Graphic Design Student will conceptualize designs and develop a wide range of print and web-based communication materials.

This position also represents the Department of Transportation Services at University-sponsored events on an as-needed basis alongside DOTS Marketing Assistants.

This position requires employment during the summer and a weekly commitment of 10–15 hours to be worked during standard office hours (M-F, 9:00 – 5:00). Occasional weekend work required.

Training is paid at the regular Graphic Design rate ($16.50).

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Work under the direction of the Graphic Design Coordinator.
  • Create graphics, illustrations, and typography for visual communications media.
  • Design branded marketing collateral and promotional materials to advertise and promote DOTS programs, services, events, and initiatives.
  • Design templates and create promotional materials for new projects as instructed.
  • Assist with the fabrication (cutting, folding, stapling, laminating) and distribution of print materials.
  • Assist the Marketing Assistants with events whenever needed.
  • Help post bus advertisements from both on and off-campus organizations.
  • Attend certain events that occur annually, as instructed, such as Maryland Day.

 

Qualifications:     
  • Previous graphic design and production experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign).
  • Intermediate knowledge of hierarchy, typography, kerning, leading, tracking, and layout.
  • Ability to work with a team.
  • Positive attitude.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and take direction well.
  • Ability to design with a quick turnaround without jeopardizing the quality of work.                             
  • Superb attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of clients and coworkers.     
  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland.
  • Portfolio of recent print and electronic work required.

 

Preferences:
  • Current or prospective Graphic Designers interested in or applying to the UMD Graphic Design Program.
  • Intermediate - Advanced knowledge of hierarchy, typography, kerning, leading, tracking, and layout.
  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland, graduating no sooner than May 2027.
