BikeUMD Program Assistant (student)

The BikeUMD Student Program Assistant is part of the BikeUMD and Micromobility Team within the Department of Transportation Services. We work to promote and elevate the bicycle culture, programs, and facilities of our Bicycle Friendly University to empower students, faculty, staff, and visitors to get to and around campus by bike, scooter, and other micromobility vehicles.
We oversee bike & electric micromobility registration, manage how and where bikes and e-scooters are parked, administer incentives and host events to educate and encourage safe riding as a healthy, fun, and sustainable means of transportation. This position involves surveying, enforcing campus regulations on bike & e-scooter parking and registration, and impounding abandoned bikes & e-scooters on the University of Maryland campus. The BikeUMD Student Program Assistant’s work week will be a mix of in-office and outdoor work. The BikeUMD Student Program Assistant can expect to work 10-15 hours a week.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Monitor campus for abandoned, unregistered, and improperly parked bicycles & e-scooters, tagging, booting, and impounding them when necessary, to support accessible campus facilities and maximize parking availability.
- Assist with managing campus bike & micromobility programming activities: including the Bicycle Commuter Incentive Program, Micromobility Registrations, impound retrievals, Long Term Bike Storage, donations, and our lock cutting service.
- Respond to email inquiries and deliver effective customer service regarding bike and e-scooter enforcement and BikeUMD programs.
- Share information about sustainable travel at events, support group rides, and lead skills workshops, including Bike Week, Maryland Day, Safety Month, and back-to-school orientations.
- Process and maintain information in Google Forms and Sheets
- Utilize power tools to safely cut locks, as needed for micromobility parking enforcement and as a service (training provided).
- Conduct field surveys to update inventories of campus bike facilities and amenities such as bike racks, bike rooms, bikeways and trails, repair stations, signage, painted markings, etc.
- Monitor emerging trends, identify issues, and process data collected on bike and micromobility use on campus.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Curious, willing to learn.
- Enthusiastic about sustainable transportation, especially bicycling and micromobility.
- Eager to work on shared tasks as part of a team.
- Excellent time management, organizational abilities, and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Knowledge of Google Workspace, using Forms, Sheets, Documents, and Gmail.
- Ability to ride a bike or electric scooter.
- Work is performed both in an office and outdoor environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with using a bike or scooter for transportation, including familiarity with nearby trails, bike routes, and safe riding.
- Experience riding a bike or scooter as part of a group.
- Possess a Maryland Driver’s License with a good driving record.
- Familiarity with safe operation of power tools (additional training provided).
WHAT YOU WILL GAIN:

- Knowledge of editing ArcGIS files for mapping bicycle infrastructure and amenities on campus.
- Practical experience using FieldMaps and GIS Online technology to document issues and manage the campus micromobility network inventory.
