Same Roads, Same Rules, Same rights
Whether you cycle, scoot or drive, it's important to know how to safely interact with others in traffic.
DOTS and RecWell are empowering Terps with the tools and know-how to be safe and confident when biking, scooting, or driving on and off campus. From classes, clinics, group rides and virtual events, we've got something for everyone to enjoy! See our calendar of events and details below.
same roads, same rules, Same Rights Principles
Make Space for Each Other: Leave 3 feet between yourself and another vehicle when passing—don’t try to squeeze by. Remember, cyclists and e-scooter riders have the right to take up the full lane.
Be Predictable: Make your intentions clear to everyone. Don’t make abrupt turns or swerve around other vehicles.
Ride on the Road: Bikes and e-scooters must use the road. If you need to use the sidewalk to reach your destination, dismount your bicycle or e-scooter and walk. Remember to always yield to pedestrians.
Follow the Law: Obey traffic signals, stop at stop signs, stay in your lane and always yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
