Show us campus transportation through your unique lens.
Calling all student photographers! We’re looking for show-stopping images that capture unique perspectives of campus transportation. Prize-winning contestants will see their work featured in future DOTS marketing campaigns!
Contestants should submit three (3) photos from each category, for a total of nine (9) photos. Use your creativity: play with light (and darkness!), exposure, angles and composition. Photo cropping and editing is permitted. However, note that the winners will be asked to also submit the original, non-edited copies.
Terps on the move: Candid photos of people using UMD transportation. Examples include people riding, boarding or waiting for the bus; a cyclist on campus; a student exiting their vehicle after parking on campus.
Vehicles on campus: Examples include Shuttle-UM buses, motorcycles, cars and bikes on campus. Vehicles can be stationary or in motion. With the exception of Shuttle-UM buses, all vehicles must be photographed on campus.
Transportation structures: Examples include garages, parking lots, parking lot signage, bike racks and bus shelters. All structures must be located on campus.
Third Place: $100
Second Place: $200
First Prize: $300
People’s Choice: $50 for the finalist whose photo receives the most likes on DOTS social media.
All prize winners will see their work featured in future DOTS marketing materials.

WHO CAN ENTER?
The contest is open only to University of Maryland students. Participants must be registered as a student and enrolled in classes during the Spring 2019 semester. The contest is not open to faculty or staff employed by the university. Students, staff and their families employed by The Department of Transportation Services are not eligible to win.
HOW ARE PHOTOS JUDGED?
The winning photographer will be chosen by a committee of UMD students and members of the DOTS staff. The panel will select the winning entries based equally upon the clarity, composition, originality, relevance to categories, technical mastery, and usability in a future DOTS marketing campaigns.
HOW WILL THE WINNERS BE ANNOUNCED?
The winners will be notified through the email address used to submit their entry, and their photos will be shared on DOTS social media and the DOTS website.
PHOTO ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible to win, the contestant must meet the following photo entry requirements:
A complete entry includes three (3) photos from each category, totalling nine (9) photos.
Photos must be high-resolution and at least 3300x2550 pixels either in .jpeg or .tiff format. Photos taken on a phone will not be considered.
If contestant submits edited photos, they should retain original copies. The contest winners may be asked to provide originals.
If a photograph features a student or students who are immediately identifiable, those students must sign a photo release form. Please submit your photo release form with your complete entry.
It is illegal to fly drones on the University of Maryland campus. No photos may be taken by drones.
Photos MUST be taken by the contestant. By entering, you represent that your entry is your own work.
Photos must be taken on campus. Shuttle photos may be taken on campus or along a bus route (ex. An Shuttle-UM bus parked at an off-campus stop). Photos inside of Shuttle-UM buses are permitted.
SUBMITTING YOUR PHOTOS
Before submitting your photos, please make sure they meet the criteria defined in the photo entry requirements.
Each photo should be named with your full name, followed by a consecutive number (Ex: “LeeSmith1.jpg, LeeSmith2.jpg”).
Create a folder in your university BOX account with your name. Upload your named photos to the folder, and share that folder with firstname.lastname@example.org. If you do not have a BOX account, it’s free to sign up. View instructions.
Photos releases are required from students who are featured in photos where they are immediately identifiable. Please include photo releases in your entry (if applicable).
All photos should be submitted by Wednesday, April 10 at 10 a.m. Photos received after the deadline of 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10 will not be considered.
By entering the contest, participants agree to allow their photographs to be published and displayed by UMD if they are one of the three finalists.
