Communications & Marketing Assistant - Student


Position Description

The Department of Transportation Services (DOTS) is looking for a student Communications and Marketing Assistant to join our communications team. This position will play an active role in engaging the campus community and promoting the UMD DOTS core messages and services through our social media and other communications and marketing channels.

Position responsibilities

  • Promote a positive and welcoming image of DOTS and its services while attending DOTS events, campus fairs and orientations. 
  • Brainstorming, writing and scheduling social media content that includes videos and photos

  • Analyzing our social media metrics

  • Adding events to the Campus Calendar and reaching out to other departments for cross-promotion opportunities

  • Brainstorming and drafting stories for our bike, sustainability and DOTS Digest e-newsletters

  • Assist with on-campus postings and distribution of marketing collateral and advertisements

  • Assist in the Shuttle-UM advertising program by responding to requests, keeping track of orders, and maintaining bus ads twice a month on Saturdays
  • Complete other office duties as assigned (cutting, folding, stapling, laminating, etc.)
  • Work with and take direction from the Communications & Outreach Coordinator and Graphic Design Coordinator

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to focus in a work environment that is sometimes noisy

  • Strong understanding of Google Drive & social media scheduling platforms

  • Must be able to work 10–15 hours a week during standard office hours (9:00 – 5:00). This position requires weekend work (Saturdays) twice a month and occasional events held on weekends or evenings. This position requires work during the summer.
