Diversity Committee Mission Statement
In concert with the diversity objectives established by the University of Maryland, College Park, the Department of Transportation Services Diversity Committee strives to manifest an inclusive, respectful and supportive community. We promote awareness and initiate professional development through recognition, understanding and advocacy of multicultural issues.
Goals & Objectives
1. To promote ongoing staff development opportunities that expands awareness and increases knowledge for diversity.
A. Include diversity training as part of the PRD process and mandate staff involvement;
Beginnin in FAll 2007, employees will be required to attend diversity workshops every two years and attend two departmental/university diversity activities each year.
B. Work with the Training & Development Manager and Office of Human Relations Programs to establish programs such as for-credit, inter-group dialogue program for DOTS staff;
C. Provide ideas and direction for DOTS diversity celebrations and both active and passive programs.
2. To form a core group of advocates for multi-cultural issues.
A. Actively offer and promote more advanced training opportunities around various areas of diversity for staff;
B. Hold monthly open forums on diversity issues for staff interested in taking on advocacy-oriented roles and getting more information on the committee.
C. Improve the overall department’s climate for diversity.
3. Work with the Human Resources Manager, Training & Development Manager and Office of Human Relations Code to ensure DOTS is compliant with policy and procedures on sexual harassment, the American’s with Disabilities Act and University Human Relations Code;
4. Provide direction in employee orientation programs to ensure a welcome environment that values diversity;
5.. Emphasize high quality customer interactions across cultural boundaries and issues of difference.
